Concert: Il siglo d’oro – Music in honour of the Virgin Mary from 16th-century Spain (Friday 17 June 2011, 7.30pm)

Il siglo d’oro – the Golden Age – was the name that Spaniards gave to their great flowering of music in the sixteenth century. Spain brought forth some of the finest writers of the age and the Virgin Mary was a popular subject with all of them. Francisco Guerrero was known as ‘el cantor de Maria’. Much of his highly characterful music was dedicated to the Virgin, from well-crafted four-part pieces to the more splendid double-choir numbers. This fascinating exploration of music from sixteenth-century Spain sets Guerrero alongside his contemporaries and colleagues Morales, Esquivel, Vivanco, Alonso Lobo and the brightest star of all, Tomás Luis de Victoria.

Concert: The Field of the Cloth of Gold (Sunday 19 June 2011, 3.00pm)

The allure of gold is intoxicating and Gregynog, the oldest extant classical music festival in Wales, has taken this, one of the oldest and most beautiful of precious metals, as the inspiration for the 2011 programme which runs from 17 June to 3 July. The Cardinall’s Musick will be performing on Sunday 19th June.

Concert: Palestrina, Allegri, Quagliati, Casciolini and Frescobaldi (Friday 24th June 2011, 7.00pm)

Fresh from the triumphant conclusion of their Byrd Edition, the final volume of which is Gramophone magazine’s Record of the Year 2010, The Cardinall’s Musick explore some central canonic works of the Italian Renaissance. Palestrina’s immaculate counterpoint will be heard to mellifluous effect in the Mass and motet Assumpta est Maria while Allegri’s heart-stopping Miserere will remind many of Ash Wednesday broadcast services from St John’s College, Cambridge, in whose unique choir Andrew Carwood once sang.
