The Music Makers
Devotion to the Virgin Mary was central to belief for 16th century Catholics and composers produced some of their very best music for her. From the sumptuous writing of Padilla and Guerrero to an unusually dramatic Palestrina, from the wit of Byrd to the playfulness of Hieronymus Praetorius. Alongside them is some of the finest music written for The Cardinall’s Musick in recent years, including Cheryl Frances Hoad’s astonishing depiction of a sixteenth century comet, Nico Muhly’s ostinato-like setting of medieval words, Judith Weir’s suave settings of George Herbert and Paul Crabtree’s tear-jerking settings of words by the Shaker writer, Ann Lee.
