Our annual performance in the Christmas Festival at St John’s, Smith Square, on the theme of Angels & Archangels.  Angels are as much part of Christmas as the shepherds, the Wise Men and the donkey. At Christmas the Angels come to earth and sing the song of joy and peace to all people. This programme tells the story with five settings of Hodie Christus natus est from composers as diverse as Palestrina and Poulenc (in memory of the 50th anniversary of his death). Victoria’s darkly brooding Missa O magnum mysterium provides a mass sequence for the first half. Then we meet Raphael and Michael, cohorts of Gabriel in Michael Tippett’s Plebs angelica before culminating in Isaac’s paen of praise the whole company of heaven – Angeli Archangeli.
